In the heart of Laurissilva World Natural Heritage by UNESCO, the trail goes along a mountain crest that connects the Paul da Serra plateau and Fanal. The path is mostly surrounded by high bushes, interrupted bv short crossings of tree covered areas. The walk zigzags and in gentle sloaps descend and climb a few of moderate level leads to viewpoints south that offer a glimpse of the Valley of Ribeira da Janela, and sometimes takes to the northern side of the Island and the valley over Chão da Ribeira and Seixal.
The trekker is often surprised by hundred year old Laurels and Stink Laurels, which will have a wider and wider trunk towards Fanal, where a lot of them are more than two hundred years old, covered by hanging lichens, a evidence of the pureness and moisterness of the air, that carries a wondering mist created by Föhn effect that crosses the landscape showering the visitor with a everchanging perspective created by the light momentarly cut by shade adding a magical, misterious feeling. Before arriving to Fanal the Viewpoint Fio gives the feeling of hanging over Chão da Ribeira, and shows the northern Madeira Shoreline. From the ridge prior to the last descent to Fanal stands over the most isolated village in Madeira with few inhabitants, Ribeira Funda.
Let nature leave You speechless.
