Levada do Estreito is a scenic walking trail that winds its way through the picturesque vineyards of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos on Madeira Island.

This levada, or irrigation channel, has been used for centuries to bring water from the mountains to the agricultural terraces below.

As you walk along the levada, you’ll be surrounded by rows of vines that cling to the steep hillsides, producing some of the island’s best grapes for Madeira wine. The trail is relatively easy, with a gentle incline and a well-marked path that takes you through tunnels and over aqueducts.

The vineyards themselves are a sight to behold, with their carefully cultivated terraces and traditional stone walls. The views from the trail are spectacular, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out to the horizon and the rugged mountain peaks rising up in the distance.

Along the way, you may also come across traditional farmhouses and small villages where locals still maintain a way of life that has changed little over the centuries. The trail is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves on the vines turn golden and the air is filled with the sweet scent of grapes.

Levada do Estreito is a must-do experience for anyone visiting Madeira Island, whether you’re a wine lover or simply looking to immerse yourself in the island’s stunning natural beauty.
